Measurements are only where it begins. Posture, balance, the way the body actually stands and moves are read first, then held in mind as a paper pattern is drawn for one body and no other.

And time is part of it from the start. A garment made this way isn't finished the day it's collected; it goes on being made, slowly, through the years he wears it.

The first fitting is rough cloth and white basting thread — the garment meeting the body for the first time. Nothing is being corrected here; this is where it begins to listen. It usually happens more than once.
